How I broke through to the other side and
revolutionized my copywriting career
I guess I'm a pretty tenacious person because most people would have given up the ghost at the five-year mark. But I was determined and through relentless networking, made contacts that would eventually lead to my hiring at an up-and-coming direct response agency located in my hometown of Portland, Oregon.
It was there that I learned why I'd had such a poorly performing freelance career. It wasn't that I was a bad copywriter. It was that I didn't know the first thing about marketing!
To succeed as a copywriter,
you MUST know marketing!
What had been missing for me was the formula for getting high quality leads, and the "personal presentation" necessary for landing them!
As I toiled in that agency year after year, writing packages and promotions for such industry giants as Dell Computer and Disney, I discovered that no matter the product or service, the process of getting leads was — pure and simple — a formula.
After eight years at the agency (and by now Senior Copywriter), I got the boot during a downsizing. And while I feared for my survival (I was now living on my own), I went full-force into phase 2 of my freelance copywriting career — but this time I had "the formula"!
This time I knew the steps I needed to take to target and impress the kind of client I'd become accustomed to working for. No more bottom feeders! Or at least I hoped.
Mathematically, I knew I had to earn at least $60,000 a year as a freelance copywriter or I'd be sliding backward from what I was earning as an employee. That meant $5,000 per month. So that was my goal... to break $5,000 at least by my sixth month of freelancing. Because my tiny bit of money would be all gone by then.
Success! I met my goal of
$5,000 in just 3 short months!
The day I started my freelance copywriting career I knew that I wasn't really a copywriter. I was really a saleman who's job it was to get the copywriter (me) a job.
So with this mindset I put into action everything I'd learned at the agency, and brushed up on leading books for sales pros in face-to-face selling situations. I got myself really, really psyched up for this phase of launching my freelance career.
I selected my target market and did powerful direct mailings. I attended local industry events and was relentless with my follow up calls. I contacted every business person I knew and even travelled to Seattle, San Francisco, and L.A. (None of the travel paid off.)
Soon I had some very nice clients... a bank in Portland, Oregon, an direct response agency also in Portland (a rather nasty competitor of my former employer), and a direct response agency in Torrance, California. I also picked up some business from smaller entities that turned out to be a losing deal, money-wise.
But what amazed me was the speed with which I was building my business. And it all came from knowing how to market, who to market to, and how to present myself.
By the third month of my new freelance copywriting career, I was at my $5,000 goal. Was I excited? I was off the charts! I was bringing design business to my boyfriend and gleefully anticipating the best year of my freelance career... all thanks to a the simple but very specific formula for getting leads — and converting them — that all smart marketers use.
